Did
you know that the first straw that you ever used in your life is still
somewhere lying in the exact form? Isn`t this fact is itself scary?
According
to the UN report, 500 billion plastic bags are used in the world, annually. India
alone generates around 5.6 million tonnes per annum (TPA) of plastic
waste which is about 15,342 tonnes per day (TPD) which mainly
includes disposable cutlery, plastic tableware, grocery bags, and straws.
With
many growing concerns that are directly associated with climatic change and
environmental pollution, tackling plastic waste are paramount. The foremost concern which is looking right into our eyes is the management of plastic waste
and its breakdown in the natural environment.
Single-use plastic cutlery has become the primary reason
behind the plastic pollution and the degradation of our environment. Even
though there is a wide variety of biodegradable disposable tableware in
the market, many people are still using plastic cutlery. Their usage may lead to high health risks and environmental
pollution. Find out the different harmful ways through which they impact our
environment below:
1. Polluting waterways: More
than half of the plastic cutlery used is thrown away carelessly into the
waterways. This pollutes our rivers, oceans, and seas. What you can do to stop
it? Ask your favorite food joint to switch to biodegradable
disposable tableware, today!
2. Killing Marine Life: The plastic waste which is produced and then dumps into the oceans' litter the marine environment killing marine animals. The animals often mistake plastic bags for food and once ingested, plastic can`t be digested. It stays in the gut and kills them.
3. Releasing pollutants in the air: Most of the plastic cutlery is made from polystyrene1- A, due to which plastic items can`t be recycled. Thus, the entire waste is sent to landfills. Using biodegradable disposable tableware or biodegradable food packaging will reduce the amount of plastic waste accumulated in the landfills.
4. Health Issues: When exposed to high temperatures, plastic releases toxic chemicals such as- dioxin, Phthalates and Biphenyl A. So, instead of plasticware, use biodegradable disposable tableware to keep your food healthy.
